ArrowXL adds first owned truck with Mercedes-Benz Actros L in strategic shift

Two-person delivery specialist ArrowXL has taken a significant step in reshaping its fleet strategy by adding its first directly operated tractor unit, marking a move away from its reliance on third-party haulage providers.

The company has introduced a Mercedes-Benz Actros L with ProCabin, supplied through Asset Alliance Group, as part of a broader push to improve efficiency and reduce costs following its recent acquisition by French logistics firm Jacky Perrenot.

Until now, ArrowXL had outsourced its heavy traction requirements. However, Procurement Manager Ian Pearson said the ownership change has opened the door to new operational approaches.

“We did our homework and realised we could make significant savings and add operational flexibility with this fantastic, fuel-efficient truck… if we did it ourselves,” he said.

The new 480hp tractor unit is based at ArrowXL’s Worcester hub and operates routes to Devon and Cornwall, pulling a double-deck trailer. Although it does not run at maximum weight, Pearson noted that the vehicle offers ample power and has been well received by drivers.

A key factor in the decision was availability. Asset Alliance Group had the model in stock, allowing ArrowXL to act quickly once the business case was approved.

The vehicle has been acquired on a three-year contract hire agreement that includes full repair and maintenance, providing cost certainty while reducing operational burden. Asset Alliance also arranged driver training through the Mercedes-Benz dealer network to help maximise fuel efficiency and ensure safe operation.

“Using contract hire provides us with cost surety over the period,” Pearson explained. “It also frees up our transport and operations people to focus on service delivery.”

Pearson added that prior experience with Asset Alliance Group influenced the decision to partner with the company again, citing its straightforward approach and strong customer support.

“Another big thing for me is that they are accessible – you can speak to somebody directly and have a conversation. The team are interested in your business and making it a success,” he said.
