Finance Connect opens 2026 podcast series with US–Europe perspectives

Finance Connect has kicked off its 2026 European Equipment Finance Podcast series, sponsored by Alfa, with host Richard O’Donohue joined by Simon Harrsen, Executive Vice President of North America at CHG-MERIDIAN.

The episode is released ahead of the Finance Connect Leaders’ Summit Europe 2026 in Cologne on 10 March, which comes at a time of growing geopolitical and economic pressure on Europe. With industry leaders preparing to debate competitiveness, regulation and innovation, the podcast offers a valuable US perspective on how asset finance companies are responding to similar challenges across the Atlantic.

Drawing on his experience working in Germany, Mexico and the United States, Simon highlights that while the fundamentals of equipment finance are consistent globally, the pace and maturity of markets differ. In the US, leasing and lifecycle management are well established, shifting competition towards speed, service quality and differentiation rather than basic market education.

A central theme of the conversation is lifecycle management and Devices-as-a-Service. Simon explains how CHG-MERIDIAN has invested heavily in asset management platforms and service-based models, including the launch of DeviceNow as a more agile, startup-style business. While demand for subscription and service models is growing across IT, healthcare and industrial equipment, he notes that traditional leasing remains strong, with funding structures and risk allocation continuing to shape how far new models can scale.

The discussion also explores differing approaches to the circular economy. While European conversations are often ESG-led, US clients are typically motivated by operational and financial benefits such as productivity gains and asset recovery. Despite the different framing, circular economy and lifecycle concepts are gaining traction in both markets.

Finally, Simon touches on the faster pace of innovation in the US, the growing influence of private credit, and the importance of knowledge-sharing across regions. He also encourages new entrants to the industry to learn from experienced colleagues, build strong networks and focus on delivering value over time.
