Stellantis has agreed to sell its entire shareholding in the Free2move car-sharing business to investment company Mutares as the automotive group continues to sharpen its focus on its core automotive operations.

The transaction, which is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions, is expected to complete by the end of 2026.

Free2move provides short- and long-term free-floating car-sharing services through its mobile application, operating one of the most geographically diverse car-sharing platforms with fleets across 14 cities in Europe and the United States.

Stellantis said the transaction is in line with the capital allocation strategy outlined in its FaSTLAne 2030 plan, which prioritises investment in regions, brands and technologies capable of delivering the strongest long-term returns.

For Mutares, the acquisition establishes a new platform within the mobility sector. The investment company plans to enhance the business through improved fleet management, continued electrification of its vehicle fleet and a renewed focus on customer experience and urban mobility solutions.

As a standalone business under Mutares’ ownership, Free2move is expected to benefit from greater operational flexibility, dedicated investment and increased agility as it pursues growth in the competitive mobility market.

Virgilio Cerutti, Head of Business Development & Partnerships at Stellantis, said: “By sharpening our focus on core automotive activities, we strengthen our capacity to deliver long-term performance.

“We are committed to working closely with all stakeholders to support a smooth transition process for customers, partners and employees.”

Johannes Laumann, Chief Investment Officer at Mutares, said: “Free2move’s car-sharing business combines a strong, internationally recognised brand with clear potential for operational improvement following an intended carve-out from Stellantis.

“Together with the management team, we look forward to strengthening Free2move’s operating model and further developing the company into an independent leading platform in the mobility sector.”

Stellantis said it will prioritise continuity for customers, partners and employees throughout the transition process.

Completion of the sale remains subject to employee consultation processes, regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.
