Auto Finance Sponsored by Auto Finance News EV range now far exceeds weekly driving needs Published: 22nd April 2026 Share Electric vehicles (EVs) can now comfortably cover nearly twice the distance driven by the average UK motorist in a week, according to new research highlighting a growing gap between perception and reality. Data released by Close Brothers Motor Finance (CBMF) shows that while modern battery electric vehicles (BEVs) offer an average range of close to 300 miles on a single charge, UK drivers typically travel just 141 miles per week. The findings suggest that concerns over “range anxiety” may no longer reflect real-world usage. Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) confirm that EV range has improved significantly in recent years, driven by advances in battery technology. However, consumer hesitation remains a key barrier to wider adoption. CBMF’s study, based on a survey of 2,000 UK motorists, found that nearly three-quarters (74%) drive fewer than 150 miles per week, while 59% travel less than 100 miles. This means that most drivers could complete their weekly journeys on a single charge in many of today’s EVs. Even plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), which typically offer around 50 miles of electric-only range, are capable of covering many daily commutes without relying on petrol. Despite this, interest in EVs, particularly in the used market, continues to lag. While almost half (48%) of respondents said they would consider a new EV for their next vehicle, only 31% expressed interest in buying a used electric model. The research points to persistent misconceptions around EV ownership as a key factor behind this hesitation. Concerns about battery longevity, access to finance, vehicle choice and availability in the second-hand market remain widespread. CBMF says many of these concerns are outdated. Modern EV batteries are typically designed to last the lifespan of the vehicle and often come with warranties of up to eight years or 100,000 miles. At the same time, lenders are increasingly offering tailored finance products for electric and hybrid vehicles, and the number of available models has expanded rapidly across all segments. The used EV market is also growing quickly, offering more affordable entry points for buyers who may be priced out of new models. John Cassidy, managing director of Close Brothers Motor Finance, said the findings underline a turning point for the industry. “The data is clear: the average UK driver could go nearly a fortnight without needing to plug in, yet range anxiety persists. “We are seeing a landmark shift where technology has officially overtaken ‘mythology.’ Whether it’s range, finance, or the used market, the barriers to entry are falling faster than public perception is changing. Motorists would benefit from speaking to dealers to gain a full understanding of how EVs can comfortably meet their everyday needs, as well as getting an oversight on the finance products available.” The study suggests that while the technical case for EV adoption is stronger than ever, improving consumer awareness will be critical in accelerating the transition to electric mobility across the UK.
