Auto Finance Sponsored by Auto Finance Associations AELR reports 4.7% rise in vehicle leasing in Spain in 2025 Published: 30th January 2026 Share Vehicle leasing activity in Spain increased in 2025, with rented vehicles accounting for more than one in five new registrations, according to data released by the Asociación Española de Leasing y Renting (AELR). Leasing operations covering passenger cars, industrial vehicles, agricultural machinery and SUVs totalled 351,414 transactions during the year, representing a 4.7% increase compared with 2024. The figure means that 22.2% of all vehicles registered in Spain in 2025 were acquired through leasing or renting arrangements. José Coronel de Palma y Martínez-Agulló, president of the AELR, said the sector had completed “a positive 2025 in terms of business figures,” adding that companies and private individuals increasingly view leasing as a suitable investment tool. He noted that this trend is reflected in the fact that just over one in five vehicles acquired last year were leased. Passenger cars continued to dominate the market, with leasing transactions rising 4.9% to 277,820 units. Van leasing increased by 7.5% to 59,787 vehicles, while agricultural leasing grew by 24.1% to 2,008 operations. By contrast, leasing of all-terrain vehicles fell 19.3% to 7,521 contracts, and truck leasing declined slightly by 1.3% to 4,149 units. Bus leasing showed the strongest growth rate, rising 76.7% to 129 operations. By power source, diesel vehicles accounted for 121,028 leased registrations in 2025, representing 34.4% of the total. Petrol vehicles remained the largest category, with 204,952 registrations, or 58.3% of all leased vehicles. Electrified and alternative fuel vehicles – including electric, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) models – together accounted for 7.2% of leasing registrations, totalling 25,433 vehicles. Fully electric vehicles led this group, with 20,136 registrations, equivalent to 5.7% of total leasing activity. Monthly data for December showed regional variations. In Catalonia, 2,298 vehicles were registered for leasing, a year-on-year decrease of 17.9%. In Madrid, registrations rose 2.6% to 30,079 vehicles. Volkswagen was the brand with the highest number of leasing registrations in December, with 2,839 vehicles, up 13% compared with the same month a year earlier. Including both new and used vehicles, total registrations in December reached 139,887 units, an increase of 2.7% year on year, according to the AELR figures.
