Corporate Member News UK’s unlikely green revolution: small firms find growth in unexpected places Published: 21st November 2025 Share A quiet green revolution is taking root in some of Britain’s most unexpected corners, as small businesses from dry cleaners to bike mechanics discover that sustainability can bring commercial success as well as environmental benefits. That’s the message from Novuna Business Finance’s latest Sustainable Business Podcast series, which spotlights entrepreneurs who are proving that going green no longer belongs only to big-budget corporations. Instead, small and micro-businesses in everyday communities are showing that practical sustainability can drive growth, cut costs, and deepen customer trust. “The most interesting thing about these stories is where they come from,” said Jo Morris, Head of Insight at Novuna Business Finance. “These aren’t big brands with huge budgets — they’re small firms in everyday communities. They’re proving that sustainability and success go hand in hand.” Reinventing traditional trades In Edinburgh, Elite Dry Cleaners is challenging the conventions of an industry long associated with heavy chemical use. Owners Sarah Sheikh and her husband have overhauled their operations, introducing energy-efficient machinery and reusable materials in place of the sector’s traditional solvents and plastics. “It’s not a gimmick,” Sarah said. “Sustainability saves time, money, and improves quality — it’s just good business.” Meanwhile in Cardiff, bike mechanic Dave Hann, founder of Motorlegs, has built a thriving enterprise around restoring and reusing bicycles that might otherwise end up in landfill. “Repairing and reusing is sustainability in its purest form,” he said. “It’s simple, it works, and customers respect it.” In the North East, landscaper Derek Bennett of DC Gardens has made nature-friendly methods the basis of his business model. By composting green waste, switching to electric tools, and incorporating wildlife protection into his services, Bennett says sustainability has become both a selling point and an operational advantage. Small steps, big impact Across the series, common themes emerged from the entrepreneurs leading this grassroots shift: Start with what matters: Sustainable practices stick when they’re rooted in genuine passion. Small changes count: Simple steps – from reusing materials to upgrading tools – accumulate over time. Collaboration accelerates progress: Sharing ideas across the small-business community sparks innovation. Efficiency boosts profitability: Greener methods often reduce operating costs and improve service quality. Learning never stops: Sustainability is an ongoing journey of experimentation and adaptation. Morris said the stories highlight how much of the UK’s green momentum is being generated from the ground up. “They’re not waiting for the green light or government guidance — they’re making changes because it makes sense for their business, their customers, and their communities.” She added that many SMEs want to be more sustainable but struggle with where to start. “That’s why examples like these matter — they show that real change starts with small, practical steps. Our role is to listen and help turn those ideas into workable actions that make a difference day to day.” Series eight of the Sustainable Business Podcast is now available to download via Novuna Business Finance’s website.
