The savings have been driven by a major shift in charging behaviour, with 82% of the organisation’s EV charging now taking place at home rather than on more expensive public networks. For many fleets, reimbursing drivers for home charging is a long-standing operational challenge, often relying on manual checks of energy bills and estimated electricity usage. The AA sought a way to streamline the process and ensure energy costs were fully and accurately reimbursed without the administrative burden. Rightcharge’s platform automates reimbursement by linking a driver’s home charger, energy tariff and vehicle. The system calculates the exact cost of each home charging session and pays the correct amount directly to the driver’s energy account, removing the need for manual submissions. Fleet managers then receive a single consolidated bill each month. The accuracy of the data is underpinned by hardware such as Easee home chargers, which provide stable, real-time usage data that feeds into the platform. The data shows that public charging was costing the organisation an average of 74.1p per kilowatt-hour, compared with 22.6p at home. The shift towards home charging delivers an average saving of £12.90 per full charge, which totals around £1,000 per driver over the course of a year. For a fleet the size of The AA’s, the cumulative impact represents a substantial operational win. Duncan Webb, Fleet Director at The AA, said the system has simplified processes while delivering immediate cost benefits. “The customer service is outstanding and their team is exceptionally responsive,” he said. “Rightcharge’s platform is helping us streamline our fleet management and will be crucial for reducing operational costs as we expand our EV fleet. We’re also working together to establish a future market design on how to reimburse our colleagues as technology advances and vehicle-to-grid becomes more common.” Charlie Cook, CEO of Rightcharge, said The AA’s results highlight the financial gains available through smarter charging management. “The AA is showing how electrification can be done. They’ve turned a complex admin problem into a simple savings engine. “It’s great to work with a partner that is already planning for tomorrow’s opportunities as the industry and technology evolve at pace,” he said.
