The Canadian Finance & Leasing Association (CFLA-ACFL) has appointed Hugh Swandel, President of Meridian OneCap Credit Corp., as its new Chair. The announcement was made on September 18th during CFLA’s 2025 Annual Conference in Winnipeg, Manitoba – Swandel’s hometown, marking a symbolic start to his two-year term leading the national association.

As Chair, Swandel will oversee the board of directors, guiding the CFLA’s strategic direction, budget, and advocacy initiatives. Representing more than 200 member companies, the CFLA is the only national organisation dedicated to advancing the interests of Canada’s asset-based financing, equipment, and vehicle leasing industry.

“It is an honour to serve as Chair of the CFLA,” said Swandel. “Canada’s asset-based finance sector is a cornerstone of our economy, empowering businesses of all sizes to innovate and grow.

“My priority is to help champion the development and sustainability of this ecosystem—by fostering collaboration, advocating for our members, and driving forward the values that make our industry resilient and future-ready.”

The CFLA is recognised as the industry’s leading voice in regulatory engagement and lobbying in Canada. It also provides members with critical resources, including exclusive data, benchmarking tools, professional development, and networking opportunities.

Michael Rothe, President & Chief Executive Officer of the CFLA, praised Swandel’s appointment: “I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Hugh and witnessing firsthand the integrity, vision, and genuine care he brings to every challenge.

“His new appointment is not only a testament to his deep expertise, but also to the respect he’s earned across our industry. Hugh’s leadership inspires those around him, and I know he will champion the values and progress that matter most to our members.”

Swandel brings decades of leadership experience to his new role. Since joining Meridian OneCap in 2019, he has helped shape the company’s growth strategy. Previously, he was Senior Managing Director at The Alta Group in Canada, where he advised finance organisations across North America. He has also held executive roles at National Leasing Group and Electronic Financial Group, and founded Swandel & Associates.

His industry leadership extends beyond corporate roles. Swandel is a past President of the National Equipment and Finance Association (NEFA), an active member of the US-based Equipment Leasing and Finance Association (ELFA), and a long-serving contributor to the CFLA. He is a three-time recipient of the CFLA’s “Member of the Year” award, the industry’s highest honour in Canada.

Swandel succeeds Howard Cobham, who completed his two-year term as Chair.
