Accelerating fleet decarbonisation

Share

Arval, in collaboration with Element Fleet Management Corp. and RMI, has released the 2024 Global Electrification Report: Accelerating Fleet Decarbonisation. The report evaluates the feasibility, benefits, and strategies for transitioning light-duty commercial fleets from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

With transportation accounting for nearly 25% of global energy-related emissions, fleet electrification has emerged as a critical opportunity for organisations to address sustainability challenges. The report offers actionable insights and strategies to help fleet managers navigate this transition effectively while maintaining operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Key findings and insights

Actionable decarbonisation strategies: The report highlights practical steps for fleet operators to lower emissions including reducing idling, optimising vehicle and fleet sizes, and deploying low- and zero-emission vehicles.

Economic and operational feasibility of light-duty EVs: Data shows that light-duty EVs now rival traditional ICE vehicles in both performance and cost in specific scenarios. Key findings emphasize the lower lifecycle emissions and potential cost savings associated with battery-electric vehicles.

Harnessing telematics for efficiency: The integration of telematics systems is identified as a critical tool to enhance fleet safety, ensure compliance, optimise productivity, and enable smart charging practices.

The role of change management: The report underscores the importance of a robust change management plan to significantly contribute to successful decarbonisation, ensuring stakeholder engagement, policy updates, and effective transition roadmaps.

The report serves as both an analytical resource and an urgent call to action.

“Reducing transportation emissions represents a significant opportunity to mitigate the impacts of climate change, but one that requires a collective effort,” stated Clay Stranger, Managing Director at RMI.

For fleet operators, the findings suggest that strategic planning and pilot initiatives can build momentum for larger-scale electrification efforts. Incremental adoption enables organisations to test and refine approaches, ensuring alignment with sustainability goals and operational requirements.

Avninder Buttar, Senior Vice President and Head of Electrification at Element Fleet Management, emphasised the broader implications of fleet decarbonisation:

“Our newly launched 2024 Global Electrification Report represents a pivotal step forward in advancing meaningful discussions about fleet decarbonisation opportunities. By leveraging the insights and strategies outlined within the report, companies can make informed decisions about their fleets that align with both their sustainability goals and business objectives.”
