The European Commission is set to launch a Strategic Dialogue on the future of the European automotive industry on January 30, marking a decisive step in addressing the challenges and opportunities facing a sector integral to the EU’s economy and climate ambitions.

Announced by President Ursula von der Leyen during a European Parliament address on November 27, 2024, the initiative emphasises the Commission’s commitment to safeguarding the long-term competitiveness, sustainability, and resilience of the automotive industry—a key pillar of European prosperity contributing 7% to the EU’s GDP and employing over 13 million people.

The Strategic Dialogue, chaired by President von der Leyen, will convene leading stakeholders from manufacturers and suppliers to trade unions and civil society representatives. Regular meetings and thematic working groups will focus on core topics, including innovation, clean transition and decarbonisation, competitiveness and resilience, trade relations and international ‘level playing field’, and regulatory streamlining and process optimisation

The discussions will inform the action plan being developed under the leadership of Commissioner Tzitzikostas. This plan aims to provide a concrete roadmap for ensuring the industry’s future within the EU.

In addition to the core working groups, the Commission will conduct broader consultations across the automotive value chain, engaging smaller stakeholders and addressing regional challenges. The European Parliament and Council will remain actively involved throughout the process, ensuring alignment with broader EU objectives.

The European automotive industry faces unprecedented challenges, including digitalisation, decarbonisation, increased global competition, and geopolitical shifts. These dynamics threaten Europe’s position as a global automotive leader.

By fostering innovation, supporting the clean transition, and bolstering competitiveness, the Strategic Dialogue aims to ensure that European carmakers not only survive but thrive in a rapidly evolving market.
