Auto Finance Sponsored by Auto Finance Market Data UK van market grows 4.8% in September as EV registrations hit record high Published: 12th October 2026 Share The UK new light commercial vehicle (LCV) market recorded its sixth consecutive month of growth in September 2026, with registrations rising 4.8% to 49,704 units, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The increase made September the strongest month of the year for new van, pickup and 4×4 registrations, surpassing the 49,505 units recorded in March, traditionally one of the busiest months for vehicle deliveries. Growth was recorded across all van categories, with large vans accounting for the majority of registrations. Deliveries of large vans increased 11.1% to 36,302 units, while medium van registrations rose 2.2% to 7,304 units. Source: SMMT Small van registrations increased 13.2% to 1,361 units, while demand for 4×4 vehicles more than tripled, rising 221.3% to 2,079 units, supported by significant fleet orders. However, pickup registrations continued to decline sharply, falling 53.8% to 2,658 units. The SMMT attributed the reduction to the reclassification of double-cab pickups as cars for benefit-in-kind and capital allowance purposes last year. September also marked a record month for battery electric van (BEV) registrations, which increased 13.4% to 4,832 units. Source: SMMT Despite this growth, electric vans accounted for just 9.6% of new registrations during the month, with their year-to-date market share standing at 10.8%. This remains significantly below the 24% target set under the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate for 2026. The SMMT said manufacturers were continuing to invest in electric vehicle technology, with more than 40 battery electric van models now available in the UK market. However, higher upfront purchase costs, delays to grid connections and insufficient charging infrastructure suitable for commercial vehicles continue to limit adoption among fleet operators. The industry body highlighted the importance of continued government support through the Plug-in Van Grant and Depot Charging Scheme, alongside measures to accelerate the rollout of public and depot charging infrastructure. Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: “September’s record electric van uptake shows manufacturers are delivering, with investment in new models and substantial discounts helping operators make the switch. “Yet, even with high fuel prices, demand remains less than half the mandated level due to higher purchase costs, grid delays and a shortage of van-suitable charging.” The SMMT has called for the government’s review of the ZEV Mandate to reflect the practical challenges facing commercial vehicle operators, arguing that regulatory targets must be supported by adequate infrastructure and financial incentives. Hawes added: “Government’s regulatory review must deliver a realistic trajectory, matched by the right support and infrastructure – giving manufacturers and operators the certainty to invest, renew their fleets and cut emissions.” Lisa Laverick Editor - Finance Connect Sign up to our newsletter Featured Stories Market DataBEV registrations surge 52% as European new car market grows Market DataUK new car market records strongest September since 2017 Market DataEU new car registrations rise 5.3% as EV demand strengthens Auto Finance
