Some awards recognise business performance. Others recognise an individual’s lasting impact on an entire industry. At the Finance Connect Summer Awards 2026, Alex Hughes, Managing Director of CA Auto Finance UK, received the Outstanding Contribution to the Asset Finance Industry award in recognition of his leadership during one of the most challenging periods the auto finance sector has faced.

As Finance Connect continues its series highlighting this year’s Summer Awards winners, we spoke to Alex Hughes about what the recognition means to him, how the industry has evolved and why developing people remains his greatest professional achievement.

Unlike many of the Summer Awards categories, the Outstanding Contribution to the Asset Finance Industry award is selected by Finance Connect to recognise individuals whose leadership and commitment have made a significant difference to the sector.

Hughes was recognised for his leadership of the Finance & Leasing Association’s motor finance division during a period of unprecedented regulatory change, while also overseeing the transformation of CA Auto Finance UK into a business offering not only traditional motor finance but a comprehensive suite of mobility and financial services solutions in partnership with leading automotive brands.

The recognition capped an outstanding evening for CA Auto Finance UK, which was also named Auto Finance Provider of the Year 2026. Together, the two awards recognised both the strength of the business and the leadership that has helped drive its continued success.

Reflecting on receiving the award, Hughes said he felt both surprised and humbled.

“I felt genuinely humbled,” he said. “To receive this recognition in an industry I am so passionate about is a profound honour.

“This award really reflects the incredibly talented colleagues and partners I have had the pleasure working alongside both within CA Auto Finance and the Finance & Leasing Association over these recent uncertain times.”

Despite leading one of the UK’s most successful automotive finance businesses, Hughes says the achievement that gives him the greatest satisfaction is helping others progress in their careers.

“My greatest satisfaction comes from developing people,” he said. “Seeing individuals I have had the privilege to manage and mentor step into leadership roles is highly rewarding.”

Looking back over his career, Hughes believes the industry has undergone a fundamental transformation.

“The transformation has been substantial,” he explained. “We have transitioned from manual, paper-driven processes focused on traditional vehicle purchasing to a highly regulated, digitally native ecosystem centred on flexible mobility solutions and rigorous consumer protection.”

Yet despite that change, he believes the industry’s greatest strength remains its ability to make a tangible difference to people’s lives.

“The feeling that we do something that really helps people: without motor finance solutions, far fewer people would be able to afford to drive newer, cleaner, safer cars.”

For those beginning their careers in asset and auto finance, Hughes believes curiosity and relationship-building will be just as important as technical knowledge.

“Remain curious and highly adaptable,” he advised. “Do not merely focus on processing transactions; strive to understand underlying consumer needs and the macro trends, such as AI and sustainability, that shape our sector.

“Crucially, never underestimate the value of building strong professional relationships.”

Looking ahead to the next decade, Hughes sees an industry becoming increasingly personalised and centred on flexible mobility.

“I envision a frictionless ecosystem where sustainable mobility is accessible to all through a broad range of solutions that fit the specific needs of different individual customers at different stages in their life,” he said.

“I hope to see our industry utilising data not only to drive growth but to deeply personalise the customer experience and proactively safeguard consumers.”
